Johnny Hiland was born with nystagmus, an eye disease that rendered him legally blind. Unable to do things sighted children could do, he started playing guitar. A romance with the instrument quickly blossomed and by the age of 7, he was performing on TV. Fast forward into adult life, and Johnny has become a chicken-pickin’ master, been signed to Steve Vai’s label and appeared at NAMM countless times. He has also paved the way for all manner of country players, such as none other than our own Eric Woolard. His characterful breakdowns in his 20 Favourite Country Licks are a joy to behold. If there is ever a man who embodies everything that is right with music, it’s Mr Hiland.
