Hello and welcome to the Rock Arpeggio Roadmap!
You might know my JTC masterclass Rock Pentatonic Roadmap, and the idea here is the same. We're taking a deep dive into arpeggios, specifically their use as melodic tools. We're going to work methodically, starting with basic shapes and then expanding them around the fretboard, adding scale notes and gradually building arpeggios into a seamless soloing approach.
The first half of the masterclass covers triads, the building blocks of our harmonic system. These are the fundamental three-note groups that provide the basis for most chords. We'll work through 30 exercises, then explore musical applications in ten licks and a full solo.
For the second half of the masterclass, we'll look at quadriads: this term means "four-note chords", specifically the diatonic 7th arpeggios. Again, there are 30 exercises, starting with basic shapes and then finding ways to combine different quadriads over a static modal vamp.
We’ll be focusing on a rock style, but these concepts can easily be applied to blues, metal and fusion. As you’ll see from the videos, I mostly use hybrid picking, but most of the content can be played with whatever picking techniques work for you. For the exercises, we’ve notated the more difficult or intense hybrid picking, as this is a fundamental part of how I play those particular exercises.
On that subject… the 60 exercises are not simply for motor skill practice. They’re all proper musical ideas that demonstrate lots of my soloing ideas. |
